Is zero-click search a new threat that kills website traffic?

The answer

Zero-click search is not a new crisis: mentions date back to 2014. What is new is the AI search layer, which has pushed zero-click rates above 90% on some platforms and forced a rethinking of attribution.

Verdict: long-standing, now accelerated Confidence: moderate-high

The claim

Zero-click search is often framed as a recent crisis triggered by AI search engines like Google AI Overviews or Perplexity. The claim is that these systems answer user queries directly in the search results, so users never click through to websites, killing traffic and rendering traditional SEO obsolete. The underlying assumption: this is a new phenomenon that caught marketers off guard.

The receipts

Our corpus tracks 149 articles across 91 publishers using 'zero-click' in their headlines. The earliest dates to 2014, when Bing Ads introduced zero-click query data. Promotional pieces outnumber doubters 68 to 13, but the first doubt appeared in March 2025. Since then, 62 more promotional articles have been published from 45 different publishers, showing the narrative stubbornly persists.

93

Percentage of Google AI Mode searches that resulted in zero clicks, as of May 2026, reported by nobori.ai.

This single metric is often used to claim that zero-click search is a crisis for website traffic. Yet the same platform noted that 100 million users had adopted AI Mode, meaning the absolute volume of zero-click queries is massive. However, zero-click does not mean zero brand impact. Many of those users still encounter brand names and citations within the AI answer.

Other studies in our corpus report zero-click rates between 58% and 69% for general search, with 68% from SparkToro (June 2026). The variation suggests different methodologies and search types. The takeaway: zero-click is the new baseline, but the exact impact depends on how you measure attribution.

What this means for you

The evidence confirms that zero-click search is real and growing. But it is not a sudden shock: the concept has been discussed for over a decade. What changed in 2025 is that major consultancies like Bain and Forrester started questioning whether the old click-based metrics still apply. The real shift is not that clicks disappear, it is that attribution must move from traffic to brand visibility and citation frequency.

  1. Stop optimizing for clicks alone. Shift your primary metrics from click-through rate to brand visibility: how often your content is cited by AI search engines, and in what context. Track citation velocity and keyword presence in AI answers using tools like Searchless, Presenc, or Nobori.
  2. Structure content for AI extraction. Write clear, authoritative answers to common questions in your niche. Use schema markup, but more importantly, use plain language and concise definitions that AI can quote verbatim. The goal is to become a trusted source that gets cited, not just linked.
  3. Measure influence, not just traffic. Set up attribution models that account for zero-click brand exposure. Monitor brand mention lift, search interest for your brand name, and direct traffic as a result of AI-cited content. If you only look at referral traffic, you will miss the full impact.

Confidence, and what would change our mind

We are moderately confident that zero-click search is a structural shift, not a passing trend. The evidence base is broad, spanning industry reports, agency blogs, and academic-style analyses. However, the majority of sources still promote fear, and we lack independent, longitudinal data on brand impact across multiple verticals. If new studies show that brand awareness and conversion are unaffected by zero-click rates, the threat narrative would weaken significantly.
