Does getting cited by AI actually work?
The claim that you can reliably optimize content to get cited by AI is overwhelmingly promoted but lacks rigorous evidence.
Only 6 of 149 articles express doubt, and the first doubt appeared in January 2026. Yet 93 promotional pieces were published after that date, from 60 different publishers.
Verdict: mostly hype, unproven Confidence: low
The claim
Getting cited by AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews is a hot topic. The claim is that by following specific optimization techniques – schema markup, topical authority, original research, Reddit seeding – any brand can earn citations. Promoters sell guides, tools, and audits on this premise.
The receipts
We analyzed 149 articles that contain 'cited by AI' in their headline, published between May 2025 and July 2026. The evidence is almost entirely promotional. Only 6 articles express doubt, and the first doubt came from amicited.com in January 2026, questioning whether BOFU content that converts on Google ever gets cited by AI. Since that doubt, 93 promotional articles have been published by 60 different publishers, many repeating the same advice without new data.

What this means for you
Founders should treat every 'get cited by AI' guide with skepticism. The evidence is thin, and the industry is incentivized to sell solutions. Instead of chasing tactics, focus on producing genuinely useful content that answers questions clearly. The few doubters highlight that even content performing well on Google may not be cited by AI, suggesting the criteria are different and not well understood.
- Audit your own data. Use tools like Am I Cited or Searchless to measure whether your pages are actually cited. Don't rely on promises. Run your own experiments and compare citation rates before and after implementing changes.
- Focus on original research. The one pattern that appears in both promotional and neutral articles is that original research and industry reports get cited more often. Invest in unique data, not regurgitated advice.
- Ignore the hype cycle. The 93 promotional articles after the first doubt show that the industry will keep selling the same playbook regardless of evidence. Stay grounded. Build a content strategy that works for your audience first, and let AI citations be a secondary metric.
Confidence, and what would change our mind
Our confidence is low because the evidence is overwhelmingly promotional and self-referential. The few doubt articles do not disprove the claim, but they highlight significant uncertainty. The volume of promotion suggests a market opportunity, not a proven methodology.
What would change our mind: A peer-reviewed study showing a causal link between specific optimization techniques and AI citation rates. Or a major AI search engine publishing its citation criteria. Or a large-scale, independent audit that finds consistent patterns across different domains.
- A controlled experiment that measures citation rates before and after implementing specific optimization techniques.
- Publication of citation criteria by OpenAI, Google, or Perplexity.
- An independent audit of thousands of sites showing that certain content types or structures consistently correlate with citations.
- A longitudinal study tracking a cohort of sites over 12 months to see if citation rates change with optimization.
